About:

The Department of Microbiology was established in 1997 with two UG courses: Microbiology, Botany and Chemistry (MBC), Microbiology, Zoology and Chemistry (MZC). In 2003, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry (Bt.M.C) combination was also offered to the students. Currently the department offers the above courses to 260 students.

To Empower Women Through Quality Education to Initiate, Promote, Develop and Sustain Innovative and Research in Field of Microbiology

MISSION :

To promote good quality education and inspiring training in different disciplines of Microbiology
To train students with basics to advanced concepts in both practical and theoretical aspects of Microbiology
To enhance the outreach program to create awareness on better understanding of

Objectives:

To gear graduates with holistic knowledge, creative power, and research abilities to develop various techniques for the profession and further improve their employability in future. Strengthen students with patience, concentration, enquiring mind, problem- solving skills, compile reports for paper presentations and updated industrial skills. Elementary knowledge in clinical, immunological, biochemical techniques for the graduates shall help them to pursue careers for higher studies, entrepreneurial abilities.

Facilities:

The Department has two labs with sophisticated equipments like Laminar air flow, Binocular microscope, Compound Microscopes, Magnetic stirrer with hot plate, Cyclomixer, Incubators, Hot air oven, Spectrophotometer, colorimeters,Autoclave, Digital balance, Monopan balance, colony counter, electrophoretic apparatus, PH meter, centrifuge, Micropipettes. The Departmental library has 218 books.

Faculty Achievements

Ms. Nahida Fatima has contributed a book chapter in a book titled”Microbial Surfactants in Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics” published by CRC press, Taylor & Francis group Dr. Kusuma Dorcas has done a faculty project on “ Efficacy of toothpastes and its antibacterial activity on bacteria causing dental caries”, and published a research paper on “ Efficacy of toothpastes and its antibacterial activity on bacteria causing dental caries” in GJRA an international journal,Volume-13,MAY 2024,ISSN No 2277-8160

Dr. Kusuma Dorcas is a reviewer for 3 Biotech , a springer journal since May 2023. 3 Biotech is indexed in UGC Care, Scopus,Web Of Science.
Ms. Nahida Fatima won the Best paper presentation award at the National seminar on “Advances in Microbiological perspectives for sustainable future” organized by Chaitanya(Deemed to be) University, Hanamkonda, Telangana on 15 & 16 February 2023

Dr. Kusuma Dorcas has authored eleven and a half chapters in a text book for B.Sc III Year, Botany, Generic Elective-”Industrial Microbiology” Semester V published by Telugu Akademi in January 2022
Ms. Nahida Fatima has prepared the e-content of BSC(MLT) Microbiology subject PRAKARA- A unit of BVR Educational Institution Private LTD. during the academic year 2021-22.
Dr. K. Kusuma Dorcas has received third position in International Essay Competition Category II (Scientists/ Industry personal/ Academicians/ Research Scholars) titled “Covid 19 Vaccine: Present and Future” organized by Faculty of Life Sciences, Mandsaur University, Mandsaur, M.P. in association with Microbiologists Society of India on 12th December 2020.
Dr. Kusuma Dorcas has been awarded her Doctorate Degree in 2017. She has guided 10 student projects and has 9 publications to her credit.

Dr. Kusuma Dorcas has presented an E-poster on “Optimisation study for enhanced alkaline protease production from Bacillus cereus NC77 and its mutants” a research paper at 59th Annual International Conference of Association of Microbiologists of India and International symposium on Host Pathogen Interactions from December 9-12, 2018, organised by School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad.

The Department of Microbiology has organized a National Webinar on “Challenges to Combat Covid-19” on 30th May, 2020.The speaker for the session was Dr.Ruchi Jain Dey, Assistant Professor, BITS Pilani, Hyderabad. The objective of the webinar was current and the possible future treatment options for covid-19 and their success rate, Personal and institutional prevention methods post lockdown. 231 participants were involved among which 72% were students,26% were faculty and 2% were research scholar belonging to states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra,Kerala,Gujarat,M.P, Punjab, U.P. and Chandigarh.

Students of B.Sc. Final year (MBC) have demonstrated an experiment and a skit on Blood Groups and Blood compatibility for Class 9 at Zilla Parishad Girls High school, Malkajgiri on 28.07.2017.They also educated the girls about Erythroblastosis fetalis,a fatal blood disorder in infants (Rh incompatibility disease).

An Awareness program on “Coronovirus – Covid-19” was conducted to the students of schools and colleges.

The Department of Microbiology has commemorated “International Microorganism Day on 17.09.2020 by presenting a documentary film on "Pioneers in Microbiology ".
On the occasion of "International Immunology Day" which is celebrated on 29th April 2021, the Department of Microbiology organized an awareness program through video to Non- teaching staff of College regarding healthy eating and how they can boost up their immunity to fight against various diseases. This video was complied by our undergraduate microbiology final year students.

Dr.Kusuma Dorcas delivered a lecture on “Differential Equations in Microbiology” as an Interdepartmental Activity with Department of Mathematics on 17.02.2020.

Ms. Shakuntala Tiwari guided a students project on “Isolation & enumeration of bacteria isolated from fermented & unfermented Idly batter” during the year 2021-2022..
