Department of Sociology was started as a part of the B.A (ESL) – Economics, Sociology, Literature course in the year 1974. Since then the Department has been developing socially conscious individuals and serving the world. Department of Sociology has had lot of feathers in its cap as a part of the college’s success.

The students of the Department of Sociology have been presenting papers all over the country and have also to their credit publications at Under-Graduate level. The Department’s vision is to create powerful women who wear the badge of activism proudly on their sleeves. The idea is to not just acquire theoretical knowledge of sociology but also apply the knowledge in real world by fighting oppression and creating a just and equal world.

Faculty Achievements

  • Ms Shalini, from the Department of Sociology got selected for the “Bergen Summer Research School” at the University of Bergen, Norway in June 2019
  • The department organized National Webinar along with Departments of History, Political Science and Public Administration on Implications of Covid-19 : Reimagining Society in June 2019
  • Ms. Shalini presented a paper on “Menstrual Literacy” at the National Seminar conducted by the Centre for Women’s studies at Kakatiya University in February 2018 on “ Gender : Contemporary issues, Challenges and issues”
  • Ms. Shalini presented a paper in the National Seminar conducted by Vanita Mahavidyalaya on the “Internal Peace- Challenges” in January 2018
  • Ms. Shalini’s research paper on “Citizen Friendly Administration – A case study of the Hyderabad Traffic Police Social Media Grievance Cell” was published in, GOVT College, Mahabubnagar.

  • Research Paper on “Understanding the relation between Menstrual literacy and Empowerment : A case study of Menstrual literacy comic magazine Menstrupedia” published in the book (ISBN no: 978-93-87896-02-4), Kakatiya University, Warangal by Ms. Shalini.
  • “Locating female sexuality within the politics of Representation through Protest poetry: Understanding the poetry of “Ms. Militancy” by Meena Kandasamy got selected for publication in the book on International Conference in Central University of Sikkim.
  • Ms. Shalini research paper on “ Forced Economic Exclusion: A Study of married Hindu and Muslim women in Hyderabad” has been published in the book for the National Seminar by Bangalore University in collaboration with Indian Sociological Society.

  • Four Students Ramya, Shawana, Spandana and Faustina presented their papers at the National Seminar on “Gender and Disability” conducted by the Department of Sociology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore in March 2019.
  • Seven B.A students from the Department of Sociology Ramya, Zahra, Faustina, Gayathri, Shawana, Spandana and Stella presented papers in the National Seminar conducted by the Centre for Women’s studies at Kakatiya University in February 2018.
  • Two students Ramya and Zahra got their papers published with ISBN during the National Seminar at Kakatiya University in February, 2018
  • Two students Stella and Zahra presented a paper at the National Seminar conducted by Vanita Mahavidyalaya on the “Street Sexual Harassment” in January 2018

FIELD TRIP

Department of Sociology along with departments of Public Administration, Political Science and Economics took the students of B.A ESL, EPP and HPP to Hyderabad Nehru Centenary Tribal Museum on 29/12/2021 as a part of field visit.

  • Department of Sociology along with Department of English took the students of B.A ESL to Zilla Parishad High School Mall , Manthangoud , Telangana on 14/03/2023 as a part of field visit and created awareness on Menstural Hygiene and Personal Hygiene.
  • Department of Sociology along with Department of English took the students of B.A (ESL) to Hyderabad Literary Festival on January 25, 2020 as a part of field visit. The students attended lectures on contemporary socio-political issues and also attended book launches. They participated in workshops and attended cultural performances.

  • The Department of social sciences of st.francis college conducted a two days work shop on Integrating Digital transformation in social sciences.

INTERDEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITY

  • The departments of Sociology, History and French conducted an inter-departmental activity on “French Revolution” on February 4, 2020. The documentary on French revolution was screened and students were divided into different groups. They were given time to discuss and prepare posters on the cultural, historical and sociological impact of French revolution on society based on the screening. After that, the groups were invited to present their posters. The students participated very actively and shared their thoughts on the important event in the world history.

LITERARY COMPETITION

  • Department of Sociology along with Department of English conducted a poetry recital on the topic: “Fight against Inequality and discrimination” on February 24, 2020. The students of B.A (ESL) and B.A (HPL) participated in this event. As a part of this, the faculty and students recited the poems written by famous poets or poems written by them which depicted their fight against all kinds of discrimination. Students had to select any one kind of inequality that they found enraged about and recite poems that were written against such discrimination. Students actively recited poems written by them and also by famous poets like Maya Angelou, Volga etc. And many issues like racism, casteism, sexism were highlighted through the recital.
  • Department of Sociology as a part of Social Sciences club conducted college level Quiz Competitions during college day celebrations in February 2018.

SOCIAL SCIENCE FEST

  • Department of Sociology along with other departments of Social Sciences conducted Arts and Social Sciences fest in September 2018. As a part of it, Poster presentations were conducted on different important social issues in September 2018.
