About:

Statistics is an application – oriented subject, which is widely used in all disciplines. It serves as an important tool in the analysis and presentation of information. Keeping in view, the ever-increasing demand of the subject in the corporate world, the college introduced the subject in the year 2000 in combination with Mathematics and Computer Science.

The initial intake was 30 students and one teaching faculty. At present there are two lecturers in the department.As the demand for the subject is increasing day by day as it is useful for higher learning, a second section was started in the year 2008 with an additional in take of 39. Since the subject is practical oriented, to inculcate research attitude, the students in the department are encouraged to take up group projects. The Department has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the company Sigma India Pvt.Ltd.

Ms. K. Sangeetha Presented a Paper in an international Conference in Mizoram University.
Dr. D. Lalitha Devi and Ms. K. Sangeetha presented a paper titled as, “Causative factors of Malnutrition and Preventive measures” on Feb 2nd 2023, organized by the Dept. of Statistics, Pachhunga University college, Mizoram University.
Dr. D. Lalitha Devi, Head, Department of Statistics, KGCW, has been appointed as BOS for St. Anns, Mehadipatnam from the year 2021-2022 onwards.
Dr.D.Lalitha Devi, Head, Department of Statistics,gave a guest talk on the topic:”Applications of Data Science in Multivariate Data Analysis” on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of SV University.
Ms.K.Sangeetha, Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics gave a guest talk on the topic:”Applications of Data Science in Health Care” on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of SV University.

Dr.D.Lalitha Devi, Head, Department of Statistics was awarded “Best Teacher Award” for the year 2021 by the Red Cross Society, Hyderabad.
Dr. D. Lalitha Devi published a paper titled “A Statistical case study on usage of ICT in teaching in various schools and colleges of Secunderabad” in UGC approved journal SAEJ, Vol.24,Issue 9 2020.
Dr. D. Lalitha Devi and Ms. M. Divya presented a paper on “Data Science in Product Bundling – Evidence from an online pizza store” at a National Seminar organized by Department of Statistics, OU.
Ms. K. Sangeetha published a paper titled “Prevalence of obesity and causative factors in school going children- A statistical study” in IJSR.

Dr. T. Sameer Nandan, DNB/MD Family Medicine, General Physician & Diabetologist, SSS Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Puttaparti presented a seminar on 16/05/2022, titled as “Well Being of Women”. Speaker emphasized on the health of women as they are the pillars behind a successful society. A healthy society is built by a healthy and independent women. He discussed the importance of well being of women and explained tips to improve ones health.

V. Vishwa Mohan, M.A., MLISc., Ph.D.Retired Professor(OU) presented a webinar on 30th Sep 2021, titled as “Formulation of Hypothesis”. Speaker emphasized on the importance of knowing the objective of experiment to frame a better hypothesis. He explained about different types of Hypothesis taking real life examples.

L.N. Yashaswy. A,Doctoral Candidate in Marketing, IIM Ahmedabad presented a webinar on 17th July 2021, titled as “Overview of R-Programming”. The speaker emphasized on the importance and applications of R programming language. He explained the basics of coding in R programming by considering different examples. He also stressed on the syntaxes and rules of using R programming. He also explained the procedures of importing the documents and explained how to save the programs after getting the output. Difference between R programming & Python was also discussed.

Dr.RameshAthe,Assistant Professor,IIIT Dharwad, Karnataka,Department of Data Science and Intelligence Systems presented a webinar on 18th Sep 2021 titled as “Introduction to Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”. The speaker emphasized on the applications of statistics in Meta-Analysis and discussed real life examples. He also explained the importance of doing research and emphasized on paper publications. He gave few tips for choosing the objective of study and showed the procedure of navigating through PubMed applications.

Dr. U. V. Somayajulu, Co-Founder, CEO, Sigma Research and consulting Pvt Limited, New Delhi presented a webinar on 10th Sep 2020, titled as “ SIGNIFICANCE OF STATISTICS IN POPULATION HEALTH RESEARCH”. The speaker emphasized on the importance of statistics in Health domain. He explained different concepts like problem formulation, sampling frame, pilot survey, population, sampling techniques, data preprocessing tools etc. with relevant examples.

Dr. DebarshiDey, Associate Director,MorphosysAG, Munich,Germany presented a webinar on 29thJune 2020, titled as “How to Become Effective Statisticians”. The speaker emphasized on the applications of statistics in Pharmacuetical Industry and gave few tips to become an effective statistician. He also discussed real examples and explained the statistical tools to be applied in pharmaceutical field. He also encouraged students to become data analysts.

Prof.A.Dhandapani, Professor and Principal scientist at ICAR-NAARM presented a webinar on 27th May 2020, titled as “ National Webinar on Statistics & Agriculture”. Speaker emphasized on the real life applications of Statistics in the field of agriculture. Sir shared a different perspective of statistics and discussed different examples in Agriculture and Design of Experiments using Statistics. He also explained different statistical tools used in the analysis of Designs of Experiment and Agriculture.

SVSRK BHARADWAJ, Senior Manager - Operations, Sigma Research and Consulting New Delhi, India organized a two day Workshop on 28/12/2019 & 29/12/2019, titled as “ Skill Development Program on Survey Data Analysis Using SPSS”. The speaker emphasized on various methods used in SPSS. The speaker gave a brief idea on skill development, research design, selection of a sample, data collection, selection of respondent’s etc. Many real life examples were also given for easy understanding of the students.

Dr. D. Lalitha Devi, Head, Associate Professor,Department of Statistics,KGCW presented a seminar on 25/10/2018, titled as “ Steps involved in Quantitative Research”. The speaker emphasized on various methods used in quantitative research. The speaker gave a brief idea on hypothesis, research design, selection of a research site, data collection, selection of respondent’s etc. Many real life examples were also given for easy understanding of the students.

Ms. K. Sangeetha , Assistant Professor, departmet of statistics , KGCW presented a seminar on 20 September 2017, titled as “ Sampling Designs and Method of Data Collection”. The Speaker Emphasized on various designs of samples and collection of data by using statistics techniques. The speaker explained real life applications with suitable examples.

On the occasion of National Statistics Day 2023 students participated in Quiz and Elocution competitions organised by NSSO and won prizes

On the occasion of Women's Day Celebrations 2023, the students of Statistics Dept. have attended a seminar on “ Data Science and Its Prospectus” held at Indian Statistical Institute, Hubsiguda, Hyderabad.

On the occasion of National Statistic Day Celebrations 2022, The Department of Statistics released a customized calendar and e-newsletter (Sankhya Samachar).

On the occasion of National Statistic Day Celebrations 2022, the students of Dept. Of statistics participated in quiz competition and essay writing competitions conducted by NSSO. Students got to know about National sample survey office and its functions, also had discussion with NSSO chief.

On the occasion of National Statistic Day Celebrations 2021, the students of Dept. of statistics performed a skit on the Importance of Statistics and conducted a Quiz on the topic of “Real life Applications of Statistics”

MoU’s – Objectives & Benefits:

The Department signed an MoU with “Sigma India.org – an Analytics Company” to facilitate students for Internships and skill based training programs / workshops on the recent updates in the field of statistics.

Advanced learners are encouraged for Internships to work with real time data for practical application of the subject.

COURSE :DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS & PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS

To understand different types of data, collection, classification and tabulation of data. Application oriented learning through interpretation of data using different diagrammatic and graphical representations
Practical way of learning the basics of central tendencies and measures of dispersion
Identifying the concept of uncertainty and probability. Exploring different applications of probability with examples
Ability to differentiate types of random variables and applications using different random variables
To apply different discrete distributions and understand their uses in real life. The importance of Binomial and Poisson distributions are explained with examples
The detailed importance of Negative Binomial, Geometric and Hyper Geometric distributions are studied along with practical problems
The concept of continuous random variables and its applications in different distributions is shown. Continuous distributions like Uniform, Exponential, Beta and Gamma are understood with examples

COURSE : STATISTICAL METHODS & INFERENCE

Differentiating linear and non linear variables and identifying the relationship between two or more variables.

Understanding the concepts of estimation theory with definitions and different criteria to identify the best estimator
Learning the basics of hypothesis testing
Ability to differentiate small sample tests and large sample tests
