About:

The Zoology department was started from the inception of the college in the year 1973. The Department is furnished with two spacious well equipped labs. The department has constantly been upgrading the laboratories to facilitate practical training. One of the remarkable features of the department is Museum of rare animals. Learning resources of the department are library, laboratories. Modern teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method are LCD projector and PPT presentation.

Objectives:

To promote students for self-employment through aquaculture, sericulture, apiculture, bio-fertilizer and vermi culture.
To provide a strong foundation for better understanding of current advance in Zoology and its practical significance.
To inculcate a strong critical thinking and analytical skills to enable students to pursue higher studies and research in life sciences or related fields of Zoology

Best Practices:

ORGANIC COMPOST MAKING

Organic compost has been initiated by the Department of Zoology in Kasturba VanavatikaPark on 15/12/2020 and as a result around 82kgs of compost has been generated on Feb 2021. As it is a continuous process, the second cycle of Compost is also been generated.

VERMICULTURE

The Department of Zoology started Vermiculture on 19th January, 2021 in the Zoology lab.

Ms. Suseela Sundari .M of Department of Zoology published a book “Immunologyand Animal Biotechnology” by S Publications with the ISBN no- 978-93-93401-17-5 in 2022.
Ms. Suseela Sundari . Assistant Professor of Zoology Department has secured Gold Medal in M.Sc; Zoology from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in April 1993.
Dr.R.K. Devi attended as a Co delegate in SIMLA 16TH Annual Conference of South India Medico legal association on 27th to 29th September 2019.

Ms. Kranthi Priya of CNDZ I Year got Third Prize in Miscellaneous Competition held at Keshav Memorial Institute of Commerce & Science on 07/05/2023.
Ms. M. Varshini of MZC secured 13th rank in Pondicherry University P.G Entrance Examination 2020.

Ms. Shivani and Ms.Kathyayini of MZC III Year participated and won First prize in Poster Presentation Competition on the occasion of “National Science Day” conducted by Department of Zoology, S.N. Vanita Maha Vidyalaya.
Ms. Roshanara and Ms. Vineela of CNDZ II Year participated and won Second prize in Model Making Competition on the occasion of “National Science Day Celebrations” conducted by Department of Zoology, S.N. Vanita Maha Vidyalaya.

Ms. K Veena Madhuri of BZC secured 267th rank in P.G Entrance Examination 2021.

Ms. Amrita Goutam of BZC III Yr represented Department of Zoology and won the consolation prize in JAM event of on the occasion of “National Science Day Celebrations” conducted by the Department of Chemistry, Osmania University on 26/2/2019. She achieved 45th rank in P.G Entrance Examination in 2019.
Ms. Sai Sree, Ms .Amrita Goutam and Usha Sree Represented Department of Zoology and won first prize in Science Quiz Competition on the occasion of “National Science Day Celebrations” conducted by the Department of Chemistry, Osmania University on 26th Febuary 2019.
Ms. Y. Nikitha of MZC III yr presented paper on PCOS on 11/8/2017 under the guidance of Dr. R.K Devi.
M.N.V. Vaishnavi of BZC III Year student presented paper and won the second prize under the guidance of D.Jyothi in the Two-Day National Seminar on Environment, Bio-Diversity, Climate Change and Human Health on 25th September 2019 Organized by Dept. Of Zoology, Nizam College , OU, Hyd.

BZC final year students Amrita Goutham and Saisree presented a paper under the guidance of Dr. R .K. Devi on “Water conservation and vector borne Diseases prevalent in the Catchment area of urban slum in Lothukunta” in Two day National seminar organised by Little Flower Degree College on 26th and 27th April 2019.

WALK OUT OF DIABETES

Departments of Zoology, Botany & Nutrition organized One day workshop “Walk out of Diabetes”, at Kasturba Gandhi Degree and PG College for Women on 22/11/2021. The profit gained from the workshop was donated to Amrutha Varshini Deaf and Dumb school, West Marredpally.
SELF EFFICACY SELF ESTEEM -The Department of Zoology had organized a workshop for students on Self-efficacy and Self- esteem on 13th and 16th February 2021.
Ms. D.Jyothi and Ms. K.Suseela Sundari, participated in Two Day Workshop “Hands on Training on Bio Analytical Techniques & Bioinformatics “conducted by the Dept. Of Biochemistry, Bhavan's Vivekananda college, Secunderabad, on 22nd and 23rd November 2019.

GANESH CHATURTHI QUIZ COMPETITION - The Department of Zoology, Botany & Environment club jointly organized online quiz competition on the account of Ganesh Chaturthi on 9 & 10th September 2021.
PRAKRITI 2021- Team Vanavatika (Botany, Zoology & Green club) organized National level online competitions for UG, PG & other students on the occasion of World Environment Day on 05/06/2021.
Botany & Zoology department jointly organized National Level Online Competitions for UG students on the occasion of World Environment Day on 5th June 2020. More than 250 students participated from all over India. Cash prizes were given to the winners and E-Certificates issued to all the participants.

The Department of Zoology Conducted a Guest lecture on “All about Teeth”, on 18/4/2023 by Dr.M.Saatmika, Dental surgeon at Universal Dental Hospital, Secunderabad The speaker emphasizes on the various types of teeth and functions of teeth.

Organized a Guest lecture on Oral hygiene by DR. Chandrakala, BDS, Cosmetic Surgeon , Partha Dental Clinic, on 25th January 2020.
Organized a Guest lecture on Eye care for Adolescent by DR. Advaith, M.B.B.S., M.S. (O Ph), FMRF, Cornial and Refractive Surgeon on 20th March 19.
Organized Guest lecture on Antigen-Antibody Reaction by DR. JyothiLakshmi, Associate Professor, HOD of Microbiology, Gandhi Medical College on 16th March 19.

Departments of Zoology, Botany & Nutrition organized A health camp in association with Vijaya Diagnostic Centre at Kasturba Gandhi Degree & P.G College for Women for faculty, non-teaching staff and Parents on 01/12/2021.
As a part of community connect , A free Eye camp organised by Sai Jyothi Opticals in Zoology department, K.G.C.W on 05th Febuary 2020 - They screened 20 children and 2 staff members of oral school for deaf and dumb Marredpally.About 70 members, including staff and students availed their services.
Partha Dental Clinic Marredpally organized a free dental camp for the staff and students of Kasturba Gandhi Degree and P.G.College on 24th and 25th January 2020 - About 160 members attented and got benefited by the camp.
A free Eye camp conducted by Sai Jyothi Opticals West Marredpally , for Teaching staff, Non-teaching staff and students of College on 20th March 2019 - About 200 members got benefited by the camp.

Assembly proceedings organized on 17/02/2020 the highlights include Zoological facts and riddles , myths and misconceptions about the Covid-19, Significance of stem cells and applications of stem cells in curing human diseases .
Assembly proceedings organized on 11-09-2018 the highlights include the prediction of weather forecasting by animals, awareness of Eco-Friendly Ganesha.
Assembly proceedings organized by the department on 06-02-2018. The highlights of the assembly are importance of human organs and their functions with models and myths and miss-conceptions of Snake bites.

International Webinar organized by Department of Zoology & Botany with IQAC on “Management of Covid- 19: Clinical Perspective” by Dr. Mitanala Datta Amara Sai, Hospitalist, Michigan, USA on 17th August 2020.

Students of Zoology Department have participated in online internship through “Learn to upgrade” on “FORENSIC SCIENCE” and “CLINICAL RESEARCH”. Students got DBT recognized NSDC associated certificates.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between both the Zoology Departments of Kasturba Gandhi Degree and PG College for Women and Sardar Patel College on 22/11/2021.

Team Vanavatika celebrated the World environmental day on04/06/2022 The theme of the day was “ONLY ONE EARTH”.

The team Vanavatika, commemorated International Day of Forest on 21/03/2022 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
The team Vanavatika, commemorated World Water Day on 22/02/2022. The theme of the event was “SAVE BLUE LIVE GREEN”.

AWARENESS PROGRAMES

Department of Zoology conducted an awareness program on Mosquito Borne diseases to Non- teaching staff of KGCW on 16/08/2022.

Department of Zoology organised a community connect program to create awareness on Mosquito borne diseases like Dengue, Chikungunya, Malaria to the students of Sardar Patel College on 20/09/2022.

As a part of Bio Awareness program, Zoology Department organized an Exhibition of Endangered species on the occasion of National Science Day on 27/02/2021.
