About:

The Zoology department was started from the inception of the college in the year 1973. The Department is furnished with two spacious well equipped labs. The department has constantly been upgrading the laboratories to facilitate practical training. One of the remarkable features of the department is Museum of rare animals. Learning resources of the department are library, laboratories. Modern teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method are LCD projector and PPT presentation.

Best Practices:

ORGANIC COMPOST MAKING

Organic compost has been initiated by the Department of Zoology in Kasturba VanavatikaPark on 15/12/2020 and as a result around 82kgs of compost has been generated on Feb 2021. As it is a continuous process, the second cycle of Compost is also been generated.

VERMICULTURE

The Department of Zoology started Vermiculture on 19th January, 2021 in the Zoology lab.

  • Departments of Zoology, Botany & Nutrition organized One day workshop “Walk out of Diabetes”, at Kasturba Gandhi Degree and PG College for Women on 22/11/2021. The profit gained from the workshop was donated to Amrutha Varshini Deaf and Dumb school, West Marredpally.

  • As a part of community connect , A free Eye camp organised by Sai Jyothi Opticals in Zoology department, K.G.C.W on 05th Febuary 2020 - They screened 20 children and 2 staff members of oral school for deaf and dumb Marredpally.About 70 members, including staff and students availed their services.
  • Partha Dental Clinic Marredpally organized a free dental camp for the staff and students of Kasturba Gandhi Degree and P.G.College on 24th and 25th January 2020 - About 160 members attented and got benefited by the camp.

  • International Webinar organized by Department of Zoology & Botany with IQAC on “Management of Covid- 19: Clinical Perspective” by Dr. Mitanala Datta Amara Sai, Hospitalist, Michigan, USA on 17th August 2020.

Students of Zoology Department have participated in online internship through “Learn to upgrade” on “FORENSIC SCIENCE” and “CLINICAL RESEARCH”. Students got DBT recognized NSDC associated certificates.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between both the Zoology Departments of Kasturba Gandhi Degree and PG College for Women and Sardar Patel College on 22/11/2021.

Paper-1: Animal Diversity-Invertebrates

I- YEAR SEMESTER- I

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Elucidate and classify groups of invertebrates viz…Protozoa, Porifera, Coelenterate, Platyhelminthes, Nemathelminths, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca and Echinodermata.
  • Characterize and classify up to order level with some special features, organs, pathogenicity, parasitic adaptations, life history and significance of invertebrates.
  • Recognize and evaluate traits that are similar and distinct among invertebrates groups.
  • Understand in vertebrates which help the students to appreciate the rich variety of animals on the earth and may even take action to protect them and ensure their survival.

I –YEAR SEMESTER- II

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the phylum Chordate while differentiating characters of Urochordata, cephalochordata, Cyclostomes, Pisces, Amphibian, Reptiles, Aves and Mammals.
  • Understand the external morphology and sexual dimorphism in chordates.
  • Study and illustrate various systems, adaptation and dentition in Mammals.
  • To understand the origin and evolutionary relationship in different subphylum of chordates.
  • Describe unique characters of urochordates, cephalochordates and fishes.

Paper-3: Animal Physiology & Animal Behaviour

II YEAR SEMESTER-III

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Elucidate functions of the entire animal body including nutrition, respiration, circulation, excretion, nerve physiology along with its structure, function, process and control.
  • Outline the basic control processes of the nervous systems and explain how this drives muscle movement and sensory perception;
  • Understand the mechanism of enzyme action and other related information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in animal behavior
  • Describe different types of behavior including Innate and Acquired types of behavior with physiology and phylogeny of learning.

Paper-4: Cell Biology, Genetics and Developmental Biology

II- YEAR SEMESTER- IV

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Gain knowledge of different biomolecules and biochemical processes of cells.
  • Study the basic concepts of Cell Biology along with various cellular functions.
  • Give overview on Mendelian, non-Mendelian inheritance, genetic disorders, gene mutations and sex determination.
  • Gather knowledge of fundamental genetics to understand how organisms, populations and species evolve.

III-YEAR SEMESTER – V

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Elucidate tissues, cells and molecules involved in host defense mechanisms.
  • Understand types of immunity .Interactions of antigens, antibodies, complements and other immune components.
  • Provide overview about immune system and allows the student to create insight as how to improve their immune system and good health.
  • Understand types of hypersensitivity reactions and auto immune diseases.

Sericulture

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Provide an overview of silk worm rearing, mulberry cultivation, pests and diseases associated with silk worm, mulberry and various process involved in silk production.
  • Understand agro based cottage industry in India that enables them to get self-Employment.
  • Comprehend the study of silkworms both physiological as well as commercial purposes including the various processes involved in the formation of silk.
  • Gain knowledge about various systems study of silkworms and cocoons.
Vermiculture

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Study the cultivation of earthworms mainly for the purpose of using them to make vermicompost from organic waste by earthworms.
  • Differentiate types of earthworms and biology of composting earthworms.
  • Illustrate different vermiculture techniques.
  • Study the applications and economic value of vermiculture.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
